Abstract:
The combined meeting of Position, Location and Navigation Symposium (PLANS) and Institute of Navigation (ION), held on April 25-27, 2006, in Coronado, California, was a huge success. Felix Goldenberg, Goodrich Co., received Walter Fried Best Paper Award for Geomagnetic Navigation Beyond the 'Magnetic Compass'. The conference focused on the autonomous navigation in the off-road environment, which requires the successful integration of many different sensors and systems. The meeting highlighted on GPS-aided 'Gyroscope-free Navigation System' that describes a full linear accelerometer based gyroscope free inertial navigation system (INS). This system permits an almost arbitrary placement and orientation of the acceleration sensors within the moving body, and allows use of existing design accelerometers, thereby reducing costs. As a result of the success, both PLANS and IONS are also looking forward to the possibility of meeting in 2008, taking future years into consideration.
